Theme #1: Family
Confused Looks
Artist Statement
In this theme I used pictures of my families in their everyday lives. Most of these were taken in my living room. I tried to capture a feeling that was uneventful to match the feeling almost everyone has over this break. Boredom. The one picture you don't see boredom in this theme is my dog. He just has no clue why there is a camera to his face. Either that or someone opened a container with food in it. I also like the photo of my brother at the computer just working on his math work. The desk the computer is laying on may seem clean but left of the computer is stacks of books and papers. The picture of my mom on the corner chair was pretty interesting because by cutting that photo in half, the main difference you will see is that the one curtain is raised and the other one has stayed lowered. I liked this theme a good amount and it is basically what Dorothea Lange tried to capture in her images to document the Great Depression.
Theme #2: Outside Environment
A Resting Danger
Artist Statement
The outdoor theme was a little tougher to capture until I realized we could use nearby outdoor photos. All the photos I took on this theme were within a mile from my house. The first two images in this theme don't have as cheerful of a theme as the other three. You can see in the first two images, the crops are all slanted and the trees are just bare. The third image is literally a shot from my window of bushes and grass leading between the houses. Even though this image is black and white, you can tell it was filled with green before due to the bushes, grass and evergreens. The fourth image is my favorite from this theme because it is just an outdoor shot of another house. The pickup truck was bright red and I thought it would have a nice effect when I made the image black and white. The day was actually gorgeous when I took the photo, but after the filter it looks like a storm is about to come. The last picture is on my patio with a statue of a cobra. I really liked how the wood chips appeared white, gray, and black after the filter and not just one color. The contrast of the image is spectacular for an image without color.
Theme #3: Home bound
4 Horses and 3 Women
Artist Statement
This theme seemed the most peaceful theme to me because almost all the photos look minimalist. I mean the only cluttered image is the one with the library. The first image is just another couch in our living room with an identical lamp from a previous picture. I really liked how the couch had some different shades to show age of the piece after people sitting on it all the time. The second picture is of my fireplace. My favorite part is the stones surrounding it. The fireplace is empty, dark, and has a black border therefore called the Black Hole. The third image is just a few liquor bottles on top of a liquor cabinet. I didn't bother getting ones from below because I just wanted to display a few. The one up front with the whisky looks great with the ball reflecting light easily. I love the fourth image with the book shelf since it has so many patterns in it. The books have all different shades to them and the wood allows for clear separation between the shelves. You can see little pieces of artwork on some of the shelves. All the book are actually organized alphabetically by author and it adds to the fun at looking at it. Of course these are basically all my parent's books not my own. The final image is a large painting in our living room that has been there for years. It was challenging for me to put the filter because it would have looked so nice in color. I don't really know what the image is portraying but I like all the humans, horses, and hands.
